What actually matters
Cleaning power. This is the point. A detergent that doesn’t lift oils, sweat, and everyday grime isn’t doing its job, no matter how good it smells.
Fragrance and skin sensitivity. Heavy fragrance is the most common cause of detergent-related skin irritation. “Free and clear” formulas skip dyes and perfumes and are the safest default for most households.
Cold-water performance. Most people wash in cold to save energy and protect fabrics. A good detergent should still clean effectively at 60–70°F.
